PLACES AROUND KAMSHET
Bhaja Caves: Built in second century, it comprises of 18 rock cut caves constructed by Buddhist monks around 200 BC. About ten caves are Buddhist viharas while one contains the Chaitya hall.
Bushy Dam: The dam is spectacular during monsoons. Swimming is not allowed in the dam.
Karla Caves: Assumed to be built around 100 AD by Buddhist monks, Karla caves is one of the largest cave temples in India.
Bedsa Caves: Different in style from the Karla Caves, Bedsa Caves were built by Hinayana Buddhists in 1st century. Renowned for animals and dancing figure sculptures.
Forts: Lonavala and surrounding regions is littered with forts dating to Maratha ruler Shivaji’s time and some dating even further. Lohagarh -- Literally means Iron fort, Lohagarh was an important battle station during Maratha rule. The fort’s four mammoth gates are still intact. Tikona fort offers panoramic view of Uksan Dam and the forts at Visapur, Tung and Lohagarh. The fort encloses a lake, Satvahana caves and the temple of Trimbakeshwar Mahadev. Tung Fort: Situated at 3500 feet, the Tung fort can be accessed after a tough and rough adventurous trek. Visapur fort: Located at an altitude of nearly 4,000 ft, the fort is in ruins.
Kondeshwar Temple: Located at Pohara near Kamshet, the temple is dedicated to Hindus god Shiva. Every year during Mahashivaratri, festival is held.
GETTING TO KAMSHET
By Air: is the nearest airport. Private taxis can be hired to reach Kamshet. If you are a budget traveler, reach the railway station and catch a suburban train heading to. Pune is connected by flights to, and by air. Chatrapati Shivaji International airport at Mumbai is the major international airport. Tourist taxis are easily available from Mumbai to Lonavala.
By Rail: Regular suburban train services run between Pune and Kamshet. If heading from Mumbai, you can board a train to Lonavala. From there catch a suburban train to Kamshet. Taxis can be hired to reach Lonavala from Mumbai or Pune stations.
By Road: Kamshet is 118 km from Mumbai and 45 km from Pune. It is about 16 km ahead of Lonavala. The hill station is connected well to Mumbai and Pune by regular bus service. Both private and state-owned buses ply regularly.
